22 kms from Tral clash: men back from burial ‘mistaken’ for dissenters, teargassed

Troopers during gunfight in Tral’s Aripal village on Saturday.

Two people were injured as Central Reserve Police Force personnel fired teargas canisters at people heading towards the home of a deceased person to offer their condolences.

The incident took place on Saturday in Sherabad village of Tral, a media report said, as the CRPF men “mistook” the mourners for a pro-freedom procession.

There was a gunfight raging on in another Tral village – Aripal— 22 kilometres away.

After performing the last rites of a local resident, the mourners were heading to his home for condolences, the daily Kashmir Uzma reported.

“However, a CRPF party passing by resorted to heavy teargas shelling thinking it was a procession.” Two people, who were injured in the shelling, were later taken to a hospital for treatment.

On Saturday, the Tral sub-district was on edge after rumours of death of local Hizb commander Umar Fayaz alias Hamad Khan in Aripal.

A CRPF trooper was wounded in a day-long gunfight in the village even as police said it had not found the body of any militant at the encounter site. Media reports quoting police sources said the militants had most likely escaped unhurt from the gunfight.
