The senior most police officer in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shupian district escaped an attempt on his life after his vehicle came under a barrage of fire from suspected insurgents.
Sources say the senior superintendent of police in the volatile south Kashmir district was passing through Haejpur when suspected insurgents ambushed his motorcade.
Sources told Kashmir Dispatch that many bullets hit the police officer Sriram Ambarkar’s bullet-proof vehicle as his motorcade was on way to attend a function organised by the army.
“The officer was scheduled to attend function “flag in ceremony” organized by army’s 34 RR in neighbouring Kulgam district,” sources said.
The police officer’s armed guards returned the fire while fleeing from the spot of attack, sources said, adding: the policemen escaped unhurt.
Huge deployments of army, special operation group and paramilitary rushed to the spot and launched a cordon and search operation to track the attackers.
At the time this report was filed, searches were going on but no contact was made with the militants.
The senior superintendent of police, Ambarkar, was unavailable for comments.
