A journalist-based in south Kashmir today was hospitalized after he was allegedly being issued life threat by personal assistant of a well-known pro-India leader of ruling PDP.
Qayoom Khan, who works as stringer for CNN News 18 and other local news outlets from Pulwama and Shopian, said he was “given death threat” by a caller whom he identified as Arif Amin, the personal assistant of PDP youth president Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra over a story which he had not done.
“I along with my colleagues was near DC Pulwama duty. I was reading and discussing a story that had appeared in Kashmir Reader newspaper regarding mobile bogus voters at Budgam. The newspaper had reported that there was clash at Budgam on Sunday between NC and PDP workers after latter allegedly brought mobile bogus voters for polling.
“We were then enquiring from each other about the visuals of the incident. Within no minutes, I received a call from a BSNL number, 9419009544, and the caller who identified himself Arif Amin, the PA of Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra, started hurling vulgar abuses to me and also threatened me by saying ‘why have you written story against Waheed sahib, we can kill you in 24 hours’,” said Khan.
Qayoom Khan said at first I was shocked to hear abuses as I was not aware about the background. “The caller accused me of providing the above mentioned story to Kashmir Reader but I told him that I am in no way associated with this paper. However he kept on abusing and threatening me for ‘writing’ against Parra,” he said.
The journalist said that after three minutes, he received another call from PRO of another PDP MLC and he also abused and threatened him. “I couldn’t tolerate all this and I fainted. My colleagues had taken me to Pulwama district hospital where I was lying unconscious for two hours. The doctors conducted my USG and gave me some injections,” Qayoom Khan said, adding that he has moved a complaint in Pulwama police station against PA of Waheed Parra.
“We approached police and filed a complaint against the PA Arif Amin for giving me life threat and abusing me without any fault. The police has asked us to come tomorrow,” he said, and expressed hope that strict legal action will be taken in this regard.
A senior police officer meanwhile said it is a non cognizable offence and they can register FIR only after court directions.
