Ahead of the August 15, government forces are paying particular attention to the motorcycles to foil Hyderpora-like attack in which eight army troopers were killed.
In connection with August 15, the security has been beefed up with forces being kept on high alert across Valley. Police have however, intensified frisking of motorcycles to avoid any lapse.
The main function will be held at Bakhshi Stadium where Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is expected to hoist the flag ceremony in this summer capital.
A police official while talking to Srinagar based news gathering agency Global News Service (GNS) said the security has been put to high vigil. “We are maintaining a high vigil as part of preparations for the Independence Day celebrations in order to avoid any untoward incident.”
“We have intensified checking of motorcycles so as to prevent any Hyderpora like incidents in which motorcycles were used,” the official said, adding that it is possible to escape on two-wheeler rather in a big car.
Pertinently, reports had claimed earlier that the forces had intensified the frisking after two motor-cycles were stolen in the summer capital.
During last month’s Hyderpora attack on the army, forces claimed that the militant had escaped using a motorcycle which the snatched from a youth.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Aashiq Hussain Bhukhari said: “Frisking and checking of identity cards are routine on August 15 as part of security preparations. There is no specific input about any particular target of militants on this Independence Day.”
Police and paramilitary forces have put up nakas at various locations across the city routes to intensify searches of two wheelers and three wheelers.
“We have made ample security arrangements,” a senior police official said, adding that the forces had made full preparations to deal with any eventuality.
Security has also been beefed at the main venue Bakhshi Stadium where the rehearsals of various cultural programs and police parade would take place for the Independence Day function.
